On behalf of the entire Department of Mining and Mineral Processing Engineering, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our page and to introduce you to a Department that is proud to be shaping the future of Zimbabwe’s mining and minerals sector.
Established in 2013 and now housed within the Faculty of Engineering at Manicaland State University of Applied Sciences, our Department was founded in line with Zimbabwe’s agenda for sustainable socio-economic transformation. Since then, we have grown into a centre of excellence dedicated to producing well-rounded, innovative engineers equipped not only with the technical expertise to extract mineral resources safely and profitably, but also with the knowledge to add value to those resources through beneficiation — turning raw minerals into wealth for our nation and its people.
Our work is firmly anchored in the Education 5.0 philosophy, which extends the traditional pillars of Teaching and Research to embrace Community Service, Innovation, and Industrialisation. Through this model, we do not merely train mining and mineral processing engineers; we cultivate innovators and industrialists capable of turning research into tangible products and solutions for the mining sector. This approach positions the Department as a key contributor to the goals of Zimbabwe’s National Development Strategies, NDS1 and NDS2, particularly in growing value addition and beneficiation, mineral resource-driven industrialisation, and the broader vision of an empowered and prosperous upper-middle-income society by 2030.
Our Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Degree in Mining and Mineral Processing Engineering combines rigorous academic training with practical, hands-on exposure to the realities of the mining industry. Students engage with core disciplines such as mine planning and design, rock mechanics and rock breaking, mineral processing, mine surveying, and project management, guided by a team of dedicated and experienced academic staff. We place strong emphasis on industry partnership, working closely with mining companies and consultants on projects that respond directly to the needs of the local mining industry and align with national industrialisation priorities, ensuring our graduates are ready to make an impact from day one.
Our alumni go on to build careers as mine managers, mine planners and designers, rock mechanics specialists, mineral processing technologists, explosives engineers, mine surveyors, consultant engineers, project managers, and researchers — carrying forward our commitment to safe, responsible, and innovative mineral resource development.
